“If the manufacturing sector is to survive over the next two decades, it will have to undergo dramatic changes in technological, environmental, economic, and social terms.” This is the main conclusion of ManuFuture, which is an evaluation of the European manufacturing industry over the next 20 years, funded by the European Commission. Thus, future manufacturing will require higher flexibility, adaptability and speed with respect to the organisation of production and supply-chain management. It also requires an increasing amount of services and inter-company collaboration. These future requirements especially concern control and networking of control systems of manufacturing enterprises at office, factory control, and field control level. To provide an integrated control architecture and control system design methodology addressing these issues the PABADIS’PROMISE project has been established intending to introduce a new control paradigm following the vision of “The order is the application”. The following article will describe the rationales and the first results of the project including a description of the newly developed control system design methodology and the newly developed distributed control system architecture related to it.
